Project Objectives
In today's digital era, artificial intelligence has quickly become a part of our daily lives. Axel Springer recently hosted an exciting AI hackathon where we created "JINGLE - AI jingle & background music generator," a groundbreaking software that uses AI to craft perfect melodies and harmonies to enhance brand appeal. In this article, we share our design journey and the challenges we faced while creating JINGLE, along with our insights and achievements from the AI hackathon.
Phase 1 - understand jingle
During the first phase of the hackathon, which focused on understanding JINGLE and ideation, I engaged with my colleagues to explore their motivations for pitching JINGLE and to contemplate how we could turn this idea into a viable product within the tight time constraints of the mini project.
At Axel Springer, as a media company, we produce video clips, podcasts, and other content that benefit from background music to engage our audience. Currently, we purchase external licenses for the background music. JINGLE could alleviate the burden on our production colleagues and reduce external expenses. By using this AI-powered generator, we can streamline our content creation process and improve the quality of our media productions, creating a win-win for the company and our audience.
Phase 2 - ideation
JINGLE's team setup, which includes one designer, one product owner, and five developers, allows us to efficiently address user needs and prioritize features for the hackathon. We've categorized JINGLE into three primary use cases:
user input
Users can tell JINGLE their desired music type, providing four main inputs: Genre, Length, BPM, and Mood.
File Upload
Users who have specific files that require background music can upload them. JINGLE will analyse the four inputs to generate corresponding music.
Text Script
JINGLE can detect the four inputs in a prepared script for podcast hosts or reporters, and create matching music accordingly.
We have integrated ChatGPT behind the scenes to help us make decisions in the second and third use cases. ChatGPT has proven to be highly effective in its role.
With these well-defined use cases, we aim to leverage AI and streamline content creation, enabling users to effortlessly access personalized and fitting background music for various media projects.
Phase 3 - make it real
During the "Make it Real" phase, I collaborated closely with the Front-End engineer to bring JINGLE to life. I ensured the logical use of interface elements and functionality layout in the Mid-Fidelity Wireframes. This facilitated a smooth handover to the engineer for implementation. The goal was to create a user-friendly and intuitive design that translates seamlessly into a functional product. Constant communication and feedback exchange were essential to ensure the successful realization of JINGLE's vision.

Use Case 1 – Parameters
This use case is simple. Users only need to provide four basic pieces of information: Genre, Length, BPM, and Mood. The system then quickly identifies the desired music type and generates a music file. If the user likes the music, they can press the "I like it" button to explore further. This streamlined process helps users find the perfect background music for their content quickly and effortlessly.
Use Case 2 & 3 – File and Text Input
Users can upload their files or text scripts to JINGLE to generate perfectly matched background music. JINGLE automatically processes four main input categories to match the content. If the initial music generated doesn't meet expectations, users can make corrections and receive a new match within seconds, saving time and expenses. If the generated music still doesn't meet expectations, users can report the discrepancy to identify areas for improvement. This seamless interaction gives users control over their content's soundtrack and ensures a delightful experience with JINGLE.
Audience Favourite ✨
We were one of the few teams at the Hackathon who presented a complete product. During the presentation, our colleagues experienced the features of uploading files and text scripts. As the Hackathon came to a close, we were honoured to receive the "Audience Favourite" award. Although it's unfortunate that the company won't be funding the completion of the product, we were able to showcase the significance of JINGLE, and this achievement filled us with a deep sense of accomplishment.
